Illustration Friday: Little Things

Sometimes it's the little things that make life wonderful like enjoying a pint at Ibsen's favorite pub.

Usually commercials are annoying, but I love the Citibank commercial with the father and son in Norway. The dad is so adorable, and has the most gentle, sweet eyes. I tried to capture some of his likeness, but I couldn't quite get his full cuteness. For those unfamiliar with this commercial the son asks his dad what he wants to do for his 60th birthday, and the dad says he'd like to go to Norway, the land of their ancestors. They sample the local fare. They see the fjords, and get new sweaters. Then they go to the hall of records, and discover that they are actually Swedish, and buy two tickets, and set off for all new adventures. You can see the video of the spot on YouTube here.

I know the commercial you mean! You've captured the Dad quite nicely, in all his sweetness. And I love your drawing style.

I think your piece captures them perfectly, -a!

But unfortunately that commercial irks me a bit, they just come off as Ugly Americans that can't tell their ancestral and cultural differences betwixt Norway and Sweden. :( Plus, I hate credit card companies, I'm sure you can remember why.

Just being honest.

I'm going to go finish a post of random crap now. Seriously.

Thanks everyone! :)

I see what you're saying Trevor, but I have to disagree about the ugly. Not everyone has the luxury of knowing their complete ancestral history. I myself, don't know as much as I'd like. I say they get credit for taking the time out of their fun vacation to do the research. And, it also makes for a comical ending. :)

It's a good commercial, and it gave me the idea to mistakenly think I'm Hawaiian for a few weeks.

I like this, and I like their sweaters most of all. No, I like their beer most of all, with the head of beer foam.

Angela -- Just terrific. You've captured the commercial and the real life characters. What a terrific illustration. I'd love to get a copy. Are there paper prints or is this only a computer image?

I'm flattered that you'd be moved enough to illustrate the moment . . . I had a ball playing the cute Dad "not" finding his roots in Norway . . . though some other blog sites felt the Dad was a bit dim-witted. Either way, cute or dim-witted . . . the spot has effected a lot of people. I'm thrilled.

Please get back to me.

Thanks . . . Norm

Viking dad approved! How cool is that?!

Very sweet, and their jazzy snowflake sweaters make it festive for the season too.
