Illustration Friday: Island

When we were kids my little brother and I used to lay out the sofa cushions and pillows all over the floor, and pretend they were islands, and that the carpet was the ocean with shark-infested waters. Too bad our carpet wasn't blue like this to help add to the illusion. On a side note, the only color of shag carpet that ever made any sense to me was green, so you could pretend it was freshly mowed grass. :)

Like everyone else, that rings pretty familiar to me, too. It was amazing how much fun you could have with ordinary furniture. Cardboard boxes, too =)

Great piece!

I just remember putting the cushions on the floor and jumping back an forth between the couch and cushions, or just bouncing on the springs in the couch!
Great illo!

My brother and I played that game too. I wonder if it was because of the move "Jaws". Anyway, your illustration brought back fond memories, and its a wonderfully done.

"The floor is lava" is what me and my sis played! She was terrible at it. I usually ended up sacrificing her to the gawds so that our mini-civilization could flourish! Ha! :P

Nice illo -a!

Thanks everyone!

Sounds like we all had a bit of fun using our imaginations with our parent's furniture! I like the variations with the crocs, and I think I remember a few lava flows in the living room too. :)

This is too funny, I completely forgot about this game until I saw this, but I remember playing it too! This illo is magical! Thanks for the book recommendations, I've never heard of Coraline but maybe I better go get it before the movie too!

Awww! This is so sweet. Really brings back memories of similar games my sisters and I used to play. Did you guys ever have to run from hot lava!?

Anyway, as usual, your illo is outstanding, whimsical, beautifully colored and very expressive. Can't wait to purchase the children's book you will, no doubt, be illustrating in the near future!
