Illustration Friday: Immovable/OutSmart 2010

Smart Car Wash - OutSmart 2010
Once in the tub with her new toy she was immovable for hours.

After seeing all the amazing entries from artist friends such as Maria Bogade and Gaia Bordicchia pouring in for Gemma Randall's OutSmart 2010 project I was inspired to create my own smart car art. I thought it would be a good project to let loose and have some fun with shapes and colors. In the beginning though, I got stuck. I had plenty of ideas, but nothing excited me enough to follow through with to a final. I had wanted to create a fantastical landscape for this little car with a forest and hills, but then the sketch of the girl appeared, and I just followed the idea from there. Sometimes you just never know where you're going to end up.

I've been doing so much traditional painting lately, but I wanted to play with digital again in Photoshop for this. It allowed me to do a lot of experimenting with colors, and to keep my sketch lines crisp.

You can check out all the wonderful submissions over on the OutSmart 2010 blog. The official OutSmart website has also just been launched, and the clean design of the site looks fantastic!

Thanks to Gemma Randall for organizing such a great project!

I think you ended up in a great place! Sometimes it's good to just let it flow. It ends up being truly you. There is something magical about this. And I like the colors. Even though you mentioned you worked in Photoshop, it has a very handmade feel. Lovely work!!

You do a very convincing digital. I wish this was reality. I'd take my car to the carwash more often.

Thanks everyone!

The support is comforting when I feel like I'm a bit out on a limb.

Eric, haha! I was hoping someone would see this from he point of view of the car owner. :)

Wonderful, Angela! I really like how this piece has a looseness to it..(you know I love your paintings of course!) and it's fun to see all of the extra linework you've added (the dashes, details in the background, etc.). I want to thank you so much for your kind visit today and words today. I am right there with you re: my work as well. I really am good with all of the feedback I receive..in fact it takes me out of my comfort zone and will only strengthen my efforts in this field. It would be awesome to meet someday, as it was so fun to meet with Tracy and Laura...such great people, and so talented. It was really fun to make the connections. Alrighty gotta get back to work, but wanted to just say a big thank you! : )
